European Council appoints “left political activists” to assess the “rule of law” in Hungary

By UME

Involved in the forthcoming report by the European Commission on the rule of law in Hungary is a political activist who describes the Hungarian government as “a regime” that no longer adheres to the standards of the “democratic rule of law”

Fidesz MEPs have written a letter protesting the European Commission’s decision to appoint a member of the Hungarian political opposition and a well-known “left political activist” to liaise with the delegation preparing a rule of law report on Hungary.

The chairman of the Fidesz group, MEP Tamás Deutsch, stated that the appointment of the anti-Fidesz politician Gábor Magyar shows that the European Commission was acting with bad faith.

“Let’s take a look at who the Commission has entrusted with the work on Hungary: Gábor Magyar, a member of a Directorate-General of the European Commission, has been appointed the contact person for the delegation that is preparing this year’s Rule of Law report for Hungary,” continued Deutsch.

Deutsch described Magyar as a “real left political activist” who could not be relied on when it came to an objective assessment of the situation in Hungary.

“The problem with Gábor Magyar is not that he is the son of György Magyar, a well-known left lawyer and politician! The appointment is a scandal because Gábor Magyar is not an independent EU official, but in fact an unruly left-wing political activist, ”said Deutsch.

Deutsch then referred to earlier statements by Magyar in which he described the Hungarian government as a “regime” that no longer adheres to the standards of the “democratic constitutional state” and in which he claimed that “the level of protection of fundamental rights has also fallen” because the government is “trying to dismantle the constitution”.

“This is Gábor Magyar’s political position. Gábor Magyar is a real left-wing political activist who has made partisan statements that have often exceeded the defamations of Ferenc Gyurcsány and Ms. Gyurcsány, ”added Deutsch.

The letter, which is addressed to the EU commissioners Věra Jourová and Didier Reynders, states that they have not kept their promises to make the rule of law report for Hungary objective and fair.

“In 2020 the European Commission prepared a so-called rule of law report. They promised to objectively evaluate every country, including Hungary, but instead a political pamphlet was born that repeated all the defamations of the European and Hungarian left against Hungary. There was indeed a major scandal over the use of political bias and double standards, ”stressed Deutsch.

After controversial negotiations last winter, in which Budapest and Warsaw initially used their veto powers to block the EU’s 1.8 trillion euro budget and economic stimulus package, which is set to run for seven years and which will transfer the funds to a new so-called “rule of law” Mechanism, negotiators from the European Council and the European Parliament finally came to a shaky deal to allow funding.

Politicians on both sides of the issue essentially claimed victory, with both Hungary and Poland claiming the deal would not allow the EU to punish the country for ideologically based disputes over the rule of law.

After the compromise was reached and the budget passed, Hungarian Justice Minister Judit Varga wrote on social media : “Victory! We have succeeded in separating ideological expectations from financial aid during a pandemic & preventing political blackmail. The agreement respects the EU treaties and our national identity. Another triumph for the Hungarian and Polish partnership. “

On the other hand, politicians of the liberal establishment described the agreement as a defeat for the Hungarian and Polish governments, noting that the original mechanism was not rewritten and the formulation on the rule of law mechanism remained.

Now, in his letter, Deutsch criticizes the EU commissioners for breaking their promise to be fair, just and impartial in their annual rule of law report.

“After this case last year, the European Commission promised that the rule of law reports this year would be produced independently and impartially, without bias and prejudice, objectively and fairly,” said the head of the Fidesz delegation in the European Parliament.
