Sooner or later it had to happen. Now the leaders of the patriotic parties, which are divided among the political families of the European Parliament, have announced the signing of a unity agreement in order to counter the unity thinking dictated by Brussels.
Viktor Orban, Marine Le Pen, Santiago Abascal, Matteo Salvini, Giorgia Meloni, and Jarosław Kaczynski, among other leaders from sixteen parties, signed a joint declaration rejecting the “bureaucratic centralism” that the European Union is trying to impose the aim of “transforming the European institutions into organs that stand above the national constitutional institutions” and attacking the sovereignty and identity of nations.
Santiago Abascal announced on Friday that VOX would join the agreement “in defense of a Europe of free, sovereign nations that respect their history and traditions. We don’t want a federal Europe in which all decisions are made in Brussels! “
Matteo Salvini posted on his Twitter account: “The Lega has signed a Charter of Values to envision a future for Europe based on freedom and identity rather than bureaucracy and homologation. The document, which was signed by parties belonging to three different factions in the EU Parliament, is another step towards building a strong and expanded alliance and an alternative to the left with taxes and wild immigration. “
For her part, Marine Le Pen announced that “the meeting of European patriots is underway: together with the most influential patriotic parties on the continent we are laying the first stone of a great alliance in the European Parliament”.
Giorgia Meloni from Fratelli d’Italia said that the current European Union “seeks a dictatorship of the majority, imposing national peculiarities on itself, in order to impose a globalist and politically correct agenda that attacks everything that characterizes and defines us as people and as peoples: Identity, family, borders, freedom of education, earnings, responsibility ”.
Jaak Madison, MEP for the Estonian Conservative People’s Party (EKRE), signed on behalf of his party: “This is the basis for a possible new political group in the European Parliament, which would be one of the largest and in which Poles, Hungarians, Danes, Italians and Representatives from many other countries will work together ”.
The agreement, known as the “Appeal for the Future of Europe”, “seeks to give a voice to those who do not recognize this one thought, taking into account the current political families to which everyone belongs”. It is announced and expected the first step of the political agreement of the patriotic, conservative, identitarian, and sovereignist parties that are taking its first steps.
All the signatory parties, with the exception of Fidesz, which did not belong to any political group after leaving the European People’s Party, belong to the two major patriotic groups in the European Parliament, the Group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) and the Identity and Democracy Group (ID) . What is striking is the absence of some parties with significant weight in the ID, such as the Freedom Party of Geert Wilders or the Alternative for Germany (AfD). The German case is more complex, as the AfD included Germany’s exit from the EU in its program at its last congress and not the reform of the European model, which could be a serious obstacle.
The declaration is only a first step in a long road ahead. So we’ll see if more of the parties that are part of the ECR and ID add their signatures to the document, and even some Central or Eastern European parties that are now part of the European People’s Party.
