In March this year, the SDS parliamentary group submitted a proposal to the National Assembly to amend the Long-Term Care Act, which would allow retirees to also serve as caregivers for family members. However, the ruling coalition rejected the proposal, claiming it was unnecessary and made no sense. Two months later, the government blatantly copied the proposal and submitted it as its own.

In March, SDS proposed amendments to the Long-Term Care Act that would allow retirees to also act as caregivers for family members. They also proposed abolishing the long-term care contribution – which everyone will soon begin paying – since it is still unclear how much funding will actually be needed.

The government issued a negative opinion on both proposals, and the coalition of Svoboda, SD, and Levica rejected them in the National Assembly.

Two months later, after one of its sessions, the government announced that it had prepared a proposal for parliamentary discussion – a copy of the SDS proposal – that would allow retirees to serve as caregivers for family members.

The Minister for a Solidary Future stated that he considers it important that the proposal emerges through dialogue with the people, especially with those who care for their loved ones every day. “We heard their voice and included it in the legislation,” he assured. The fact that this proposal was originally submitted by SDS, and not by some imagined retirees he refers to, was, of course, left unsaid.
