Technical and legal border barrier works

By: V4 Agency

Soldiers and police will continue to protect the border even during the holidays and Hungary will carry on with its current migration policy next year, the Hungarian prime minister’s top domestic security adviser emphasized on Wednesday.

Soldiers and officers serving at the border have met their obligations with honour and acted lawfully throughout the whole year, Gyorgy Bakondi said.

“The technical and legal border barrier has worked”, he noted, adding that soldiers and police officers will remain on duty even during the upcoming holidays.

Had the government failed to introduce the measures necessary to protect the country in 2015, by now Hungary “could have turned into a permanent migration corridor, a parking lot or even a target destination”, he said.

According to information provided by police, officers apprehended more then 900 border violators last week.

Official figures published on the Hungarian police’s website reveal that last week officers apprehended 1496 border violators, escorting them back to the other side of the temporary border barrier. The week before, from 7-13 December, this number was 716. Last week police caught 20 people along the Romania-Croatia section of the border and authorities have launched proceedings against 22 individuals on suspicion of human smuggling, according to the police report.
