Sweden has taken a much different path in the fight against the coronavirus epidemic than other countries in the world. It is based on the fact that the state introduces slightly milder measures than other countries, and at the same time bets on the fact that people will adhere to the recommendations better than elsewhere. But it is becoming increasingly clear that this strategy is not working. The country has been facing a sharp rise in infections in recent days, and its hospitals are filling up faster than any other in Europe.
So far, more than 6,200 dead have been recorded. Swedish chief epidemiologist Anders Tegnell thus expressed considerable concern yesterday that the country could face a severe crisis. “Immunity to covid-19 is most likely lower in Sweden than we estimated,” he said.
The Swedish economy did not survive the first wave of infections any better than the other economies
The number of deaths in one day has risen to its highest level in a few months, according to Reuters. Sweden is thus facing a second wave of the epidemic, after the authorities were convinced in August that a second wave was not possible. This is one of the reasons why Swedish Prime Minister Stean Lofven has announced that the government will propose a law banning the sale of alcohol across the country after 22.00 in bars, restaurants and nightclubs.
Social Affairs Minister Lena Hallengren announced that all bars serving alcohol will have to close half an hour after 22.00. Three days ago, Sweden also reintroduced a ban on visits to nursing homes. Statistics also showed that the Swedish economy did not survive the first wave of infections any better than the rest of the world’s economies, although the country was more open.
