The Voice of Europe reports that Changes Poland’s Law and Justice party government have made to Poland’s judicial system since their rise to power in 2015, including the body that nominates the country’s judges, is now being deemed as no longer independent of political control.
As a result, the EU judicial organisation, the European Network of Councils for the Judiciary, on Monday suspended Poland. The Polish Judicial Council (KRS) has had its voting rights removed and is excluded from participating in ENJC activities, after the organisation, which unites EU countries’ judicial systems, took a ‘fact-finding’ trip.
“The extreme circumstances of this particular case have led to the decision just taken,” the ENCJ stated following the action, adding that “member states are free to organise their judicial systems in a way that they see fit, but there are some minimum standards that have to be complied with.”
