“Let’s use our common sense”, Polish PM Mateusz Morawiecki said, adding that a new wave of infections can only be prevented by vaccination. Unfortunately many have decided not to observe the imposed restrictions, he said, citing the example of the current street protests in the capital supported by the opposition.

“I am extremely sorry that we, as members of the EU, are trailing behind other countries in this pressing matter”, Mateusz Morawiecki said, with regards to mass vaccination.

In his recent interview with Gazeta Polska, he said every day that goes by without a vaccine is a tragedy, causing enormous economic damage. The Polish premier stressed that he spoke before the European Commmission and Council to call for the acceleration of the vaccine’s authorisation. “I’m glad that they heard what I said, and all signs are that mass vaccination in the communities can commence earlier than planned, even this year,” Mr Morawiecki said.

He said at first the coronavirus epidemic produced a few hundred infections every day, and if its third wave will trigger only one-fifth of the increase observed during the second wave, Poland can expect 50 thousand new infections each day. “In this case our fourth line of defence, the country’s reserve hospitals, may prove insufficient, our healthcare system may become exhausted and eventually collapse,” he warned.

“We saw that the vaccine was working and that it’s impossible to break the infection waves and reboot the economy without a huge mass vaccination programme”, Mr Morawiecki said, adding that the future of the Polish economy, as well as the Polish nation, depends on whether we are able to defeat the coronavirus, and how swiftly.
