Nigerian immigrant brings new variant of Covid to Italy

By UME

Three more “Indian” variants and a new “Nigerian” variant have been identified in the Molecular Epidemiology and Public Health Laboratory at the Azienda Ospedaliero-Universitaria Policlinico di Bari, a regional reference center for Sars-CoV-2.

Today’s three cases of the “Indian” variant belong to another cluster in the province of Lecce. The samples were sent to the regional reference laboratory a few days ago from the Prevention Department in Lecce.

“A new ‘Nigerian-like’ variant was characterized because it belongs to the same group as the Nigerian one, but has more mutations in the spike protein and in other parts of the virus,” explains Maria Chironna, head of the laboratory. “The person of foreign nationality infected with this variant was admitted to a hospital in the province of Bari with bilateral pneumonia and was only released a few days ago,” said the virologist.
