Hungary: Public opinion takes the side of the government in the referendum

By: UME

The latest opinion poll by the Nézőpont Institute shows that the vast majority agree with the government’s position

Three quarters of Hungarians, or 74 percent, are of the opinion that education about homosexuality in schools and kindergartens should be made dependent on parental permission, according to a nationwide representative survey by the Nézőpont (Viewpoint) Institute for the Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet.

According to the latest survey by the Nézőpont Institute, the vast majority of people agree with the government’s position on this issue, and only one in five – twenty percent – think that raising children’s awareness at school does not depend on parental permission should be, as it is increasingly being promoted through the “awareness program” in Western Europe.

The Nézőpont Institute also points out that the government referendum could cause serious headaches for the left, as the majority of government critics – 56 percent – also support parental permission and only a third are on the side of LGBTQ organizations.

With an overwhelming pro-government support of 86 percent, two-thirds of those with unknown preference also support the government’s position that parents should have the right to decide what their children are taught about homosexuality in public institutions. There are minimal differences by demographic group: two-thirds of young people and four-fifths of older people share the government’s position, while seven in ten people in Budapest and three in four in rural areas think that parents should decide on the issue .

Prime Minister Viktor Orbán announced on his social media page last Wednesday that the Hungarian government would hold a referendum, as Brussels has clearly attacked Hungary over the Child Protection Act and is now calling for changes to the Education Act and the child protection rules. The questions of the referendum are:

  1. Do you support the introduction of sexual orientation classes for underage children in public educational institutions without parental consent?
  2. Do you support the promotion of gender reassignment therapy for minors?
  3. Do you support the availability of gender reassignment therapy for minors?
  4. Do you support unrestricted exposure of minors to sexually explicit media content that affects their development?
  5. Do you support showing gender change media content to minors?
