Prime Minister Janša: DeSUS cadres in the government should decide whether they are in the government or in the opposition

By: P.T.

DeSUS cadres in the government should decide whether they are in the government or in the opposition, wrote Prime Minister Janez Janša on Twitter. He recalled the statute of DeSUS, which stipulates that in the event that DeSUS leaves the coalition, its minister must resign. And DeSUS left the decision about this to Janša. It is difficult to work with someone who does not even adhere to their own statute, adds Janša.

“A good example of the (non)-rule of law and rules,” Janša added on Twitter. He pointed out that the confusion is the last thing they need in this extremely serious situation.

Today, the council of DeSUS party, which consists of about 60 members,, voted with 37 votes in favour and with no votes against the proposal to withdraw from the government coalition and support the party’s president Karl Erjavec in his candidacy for prime minister of the possible new government. Two DeSUS ministers – Tomaž Gantar as Minister for Health, and Jože Pogačnik as Minister for Agriculture – remain in the government for now, as the party leaves the decision about them to Janša.

The party’s statute, which was amended in January this year, stipulates in Article 41 that in the event that DeSUS withdraws from the government coalition, its minister must resign. Failure to do so will result in termination of his party membership.

Erjavec expects that the parliamentary group will follow today’s decisions of the party’s bodies. But information has been coming from the latter in recent days that they may not follow the dicison of the party’s bodies in this case.

NSi champion Matej Tonin announced via Twitter today that after the talks it is clear that the current government has a solid 47 votes in the National Assembly. He said that they will together focus on damming covid-19, economic recovery, and strengthening healthcare. No more is known about the meeting. According to unofficial information, numerous talks were held today with parliamentary groups and individual MPs.
