Janez Janša at the Forum for Agriculture Congress: “We in the SDS know how to move forward”

“The elections for the Chamber of Agriculture and Forestry of Slovenia (KGZS) will soon take place. This organisation is a tool of Slovenian agriculture and the countryside, which can have a strong voice when it comes to defending Slovenian agriculture and farmers. Their activities were missing when farmers all over Europe raised their voices,” emphasised Janez Janša, the president of the Slovenian Democratic Party, at today’s programme congress of the Forum for Agriculture at SDS.

Janez Janša recalled that these organisations were more demanding during their government. “There was practically not a week without us sitting together. And that is how it should be. But it is not right that they are not equally demanding of this government,” he asserted.

In his address, Janša highlighted an example of an excessive view of agriculture with the case of the confiscation of cows in Dolenjska, which fortunately was resolved after a legal saga. “But everything that was discovered back then, and all the debate that was on social media at that time, revealed that in Slovenia, there are hundreds of thousands of people who believe that agriculture is actually unnecessary, that it is something where animals are tortured, and that food grows in stores.” Janša says that there is still a lot of work ahead. “The stronger we are, the sooner it will be done.”

According to Janša, the Forum for Agriculture and the Countryside is an extremely important institution within the SDS party. “The agriculture committee within the SDS strategic council has also already prepared a comprehensive programme for the next term. We in the SDS know how to move forward.” At today’s congress, the Forum for Agriculture and the Countryside adopted a programme for the upcoming term, confirmed the list of candidates for the KGZS elections, and the Rural Youth of the Forum for Agriculture was also established. It will be led by young farmer Gašper Šega.

At the sidelines of the Agra Agricultural and Food Fair, Member of the European Parliament Dr Milan Zver also addressed the SDS party’s Agricultural Forum. According to Zver, the European Union has, in recent years, severely hindered European farmers with new regulations and bureaucracy. “Unfortunately, the decision-making process, especially in the European Commission, lacked the understanding that without farmers, there is no food, and without food, there is no life.”

He emphasised that in this term, he will serve as a member of the European Parliament’s Committee on the Environment, where European agriculture has suffered the most damage. “I promise that I will do everything to help Slovenian farmers, not hinder them. Above all, we will need to repeal many measures harmful to agriculture from the green ideology,” the Member of the European Parliament stated confidently.

The congress was attended by two queens – the Wine Queen of Jeruzalem-Ormož Hills, Sandra Kumer, and the Milk Queen of the Green Valley of Slovenia 2024, Alenka Gradišnik.
