An interview with a Croatian author and one of the most prominent representatives of the European New Right, dr. Tomislav Sunić, has recently been posted on the Slovenian website Tradicija. Dr. Sunić briefly presented the school of thought of the new right and explained that these are ideas and views that are mainly represented by the French author and philosopher Alain de Benoist.

The main goal of this school of thought, which developed from de Benoist’s association GRECE (Groupement de recherche et d’études pour la civilization européenne, or the Association for Research and Studies of European Civilization) in the late 60’s and later became known as the new right, is to revive a conservative tradition in philosophy, sociology, literature and other parts of human cognition, which fell into oblivion after the Second World War or was no longer permitted due to political reasons. In doing so, dr. Sunić points out the importance of cultural hegemony, as the ideas advocated by the new right became forgotten or undesirable precisely because, following the Second World War, a new cultural hegemony emerged in universities and society, in which only supported the left. As a result, students nowadays have no idea what happened on the conservative intellectual scene and who were the main leaders and authors on the right-wing. He desires to balance this with his books and essays and show that the right, which is nowadays called the new right, also has its own intellectual “artillery” that is slowly expanding. However, due to the left-wing cultural hegemony that prevails today, it will take some time for these ideas, which are not in line with left-wing political correctness, to become widespread among people. Dr. Sunić believes that the precondition for a success of any political party or movement is precisely the establishment of a cultural hegemony – a certain number of intellectuals who are able to control ” the main discourse”. He emphasises that the right-wing must work primarily on its own cultural hegemony, and advises readers to read his book “Against Democracy and Equality – The European New Right” while pointing out that the authors and thinkers of the New Right do not oppose democracy as such, but are only critical of today’s liberal democracy, which the title of the book refers to.

In the interview, dr. Sunić also spoke about one of the main problems of the European nations – changes in the demographics and mass migration. He argued that when discussing mass migration, it is necessary to know its cause, which is hidden in the liberal doctrine and the desire of large companies for cheap labor. Thus, these companies support open borders. Moreover, neo-Marxists want to create a racially mixed society, as they see fascism in every form of nationalism. He also noted that “old nationalisms of the first half of the 20th century” caused a lot of damage to European nations and also resulted in bad relations between countries due to past conflicts and resentments, such as between Romanians and Hungarians, Germans and Poles or Croats and Serbs. However, it is essential that they realise that today they share a common goal – the preservation and revitalisation of Europe – and they must decide whether it is worth escalating old conflicts or whether they should join forces and fight together for the future of Europe. Dr. Sunić warned about millions of migrants who are waiting to enter Europe. He observed that Europe’s ethnic profile is changing rapidly today with European metropolises looking more and more like suburbs of Istanbul or Algeria than Europe. Thus, the priority of European nations today must be engagement in the common struggle, without denial their own national and cultural identities.

Dr. Sunić also discussed other topics, including the ancient Greek titans, his short story Titans Are in Town and his experiences from the time he lived in the USA.
