MI Aleš Hojs: Western Balkans Slovenia’s political and strategic priority

By: UKOM

Minister of the Interior Aleš Hojs took part in the videoconference of the Berlin process ministers of the interior. Ministers were examining options for further cooperation in fight against organised crime and corruption in the Western Balkan countries and talked about EU’s support to Western Balkan countries in managing migrations.

As Slovenia is about to hold the presidency of the Council of the EU, minster Hojs presented the results of the recent Brdo Process ministerial meeting. »Western Balkans are a political and strategic priority,« Hojs said, continuing: »I would like to highlight how important it is to continue close cooperation and provide support to the countries of the Western Balkans in their integration in Euro-Atlantic integrations in terms of transposal of EU standards.«

In early June, Slovenia hosted ministers of the Western Balkan countries as part of the Brdo Process. The important topics of migrations management and investigation and prevention of online sexual child abuse that were at the forefront of the Brdo process conference agenda are also going to be the focus during Slovenian presidency of the EU Council. Ministers defined the requirements of each country in the region and agreed on further activities. Minister Hojs accentuated the importance of participation of European partners in the defined requirements and activities that will be taking place on different levels and involve all interested partners. »Results of our joint efforts, which will include what was discussed today, are going to be presented at the EU-Western Balkans forum next December« Minister Hojs concluded.

The purpose of the Berlin Process established in 2014 is to keep EU’s enlargement to the Western Balkans on the European agenda and sustain the positive dynamics for reform through various projects. Ministerial meetings of Berlin Process have been taking place since 2018 with regular agenda topics that include boosting cooperation in combat against organised crime and corruption and cooperation and support in migrations management.
