Jelka Godec: Will Slovenia continue to die in instalments for another 2 years or will we have preliminary elections?

By: C. R.

Leader of the SDS Parliamentary Group Jelka Godec and MP Andrej Kosi spoke at the press conference about proposals to hold advisory referendums on the accommodation of illegal migrants in Slovenia and on confidence in the government led by Robert Golob.

Jelka Godec highlighted recent polls at the outset, indicating that the government led by Robert Golob is the least successful government in the history of Slovenia. Indeed, 70% of the people believe that the government is not performing well. She emphasised that all the lies and empty promises we have been hearing from the government over the past two years are putting Slovenia in a position where it is no longer competitive in the European market. Moreover, laws harmful to the Slovenian nation and state are being passed in the National Assembly by the coalition. She added that if this government continues its work, its support will likely drop to 0%, but by then it will be too late for Slovenia.

Instead of addressing developmental issues, demographics, healthcare reform, easing the burden on the economy, and taxpayers, the government is primarily and almost exclusively focused on personnel matters and targeting dissenters, damaging public finances, and managing public funds inefficiently and unwisely. It is for this reason that the SDS Parliamentary Group proposes an advisory referendum on confidence in the Government of the Republic of Slovenia with the following question: “Are you in favour of the Government of the Republic of Slovenia, led by Dr Robert Golob, to conclude its mandate, and call for preliminary elections for members of the National Assembly?”

MP Andrej Kosi emphasised that illegal border crossings currently represent the greatest security challenge for Slovenia as well as for other European Union member states. He further highlighted that the government has made a decision to establish asylum centres at the former border crossings of Obrežje and Središče ob Dravi. This decision came as a negative surprise to both mayors and residents. It was made without prior notification to the local communities, mayors, and citizens. None of the government or other relevant institutions informed them beforehand, let alone asked for their opinions or obtained consent.

Therefore, the SDS Parliamentary Group proposes an advisory referendum on the accommodation of illegal migrants in the Republic of Slovenia with the following question: “Are you in favour of the construction of new asylum centres and their branches for the accommodation of illegal migrants in the Republic of Slovenia?”
