As is customary whenever a new government takes office, the arrival of the new Janša government has again brought changes to the supervisory board of Borzen, the electricity market operator. According to the Government Communication Office (Ukom), Silvo Sok, Damjan Stanek, and Andrej Vizjak began their five‑year terms as Borzen supervisors on Friday. The latter has drawn particular public attention, as he is a former member of Janša’s government whom the media previously attempted to discredit through a manipulated recording.

“The presstitutes are asking why the Slovenian government replaced Borzen’s supervisors. They never asked how several million euros were loaned to lobbyists connected to the SD party, loans that still have not been repaid. Nor did they ask why the director (from the GEN network) paid herself €82,322 in bonuses over two years, on top of her salary. #rich,” SDS MP Aleš Hojs pointed out on X after the dismissal of Mojca Veljkovič, Ivana Nedižavec Korada, and Hinko Šolinc from Borzen’s supervisory board.

The SDS vice‑president supported his claim with a table showing the amounts (gross euros) of bonuses (the variable part of the salary) paid to Borzen directors Borut Rajer and Mojca Kert in the years 2022–2025. The specific amounts, far beyond the reach of most ordinary citizens, can be seen below:

Golob’s cadre in Borzen and Star Solar

Borzen, whose core activity is performing the public service of electricity market operation and the public service of the support scheme centre, is headed by Mojca Kert. She came to the top of this state‑owned company from Gen‑I, where the former prime minister had spent years as chairman of the management board. Kert openly sympathises with the views of the Freedom Movement, as she ran as a parliamentary candidate on Golob’s party list in the previous election.

Golob therefore ensured loyal personnel at the top of Borzen. How important this was to him became clear in 2024. That year, news circulated that Golob’s electricity‑production company Star Solar, which he took over at the end of 2023 from his former wife Janja Nemec Golob, becoming its sole owner, was earning money primarily by selling electricity to the state‑owned Borzen, i.e., to the state. Early last year, Forbes reported that Golob’s company had had a successful year, considering the payments from Borzen. The Erar transparency app showed that transfers jumped from €111,000 in 2023 to €261,000 in 2024.

After the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (KPK) received reports indicating alleged irregularities in Borzen’s dealings with Star Solar, it examined the matter and reached the expected conclusion: no violations. However, the KPK did identify corruption risks related to the appointment of Borzen’s supervisory board members and therefore issued recommendations to the government to reduce these risks.

After all, SDS attempts to establish a parliamentary inquiry commission failed in the National Assembly, the Assembly, at the proposal of the National Council, established a parliamentary investigative commission in May 2024. Its focus is Star Solar, Golob’s former company GEN‑I, and the financing of his party, the Freedom Movement. The investigation is meant to determine any potential responsibility of Golob for alleged irregularities during his leadership of GEN‑I and to examine the operations of Star Solar and its transactions with Borzen. However, since the Freedom Movement took over leadership of the commission, the entire process has, unsurprisingly, reached a standstill.
