Many were surprised that Anže Logar named his movement, which evolved into a political party, “Democrats”, as on one hand, it is a fairly generic word without much resonance, and on the other, the name is tainted by the American far left “woke” Democrats (the Democratic Party). As we have learned, strange things are already happening regarding the registration of the name.
A reader informed us that the Slovenian Democratic Party had already submitted an electronic application to the Intellectual Property Office on October 28th, 2024, to register the trademark “Democrats”.
It is significant to note that the Cooperation Platform, led by Anže Logar, had not yet submitted their application at that time. Furthermore, it is certain that it was not submitted on October 26th either. Nevertheless, the application of the Cooperation Platform (the newly named “Democrats”) suddenly appeared retroactively dated to October 24th, 2024, on the Intellectual Property Office’s website.
It appears the office retroactively entered the application, moving it four days ahead of the SDS application (which had originally been submitted first). This is also confirmed by verification on the internet archive “The Wayback Machine”.
Question for the Intellectual Property Office
We inquired with the Intellectual Property Office of the Republic of Slovenia about how this happened. We posed the following question:
A reader alerted us that the Slovenian Democratic Party submitted an application to register the trademark “Democrats” on October 28th, 2024. On that day, there was no similar application from the Cooperation Platform. Then, a few days later, an identical application from the Cooperation Platform appeared, dated October 24th, as if it had been retroactively entered. Was this a case of backdated entry? Or how else can you explain the discrepancy in the application entry dates?
Democrats already registered
Incidentally, political projects with the name “Democrats” are already present in the registry.
The word “Democrats” has been listed in the office’s registry since 2009 by the “Young Liberal Democrats”, and since 2018 by the “Social Democrats”.
