Frontex has become the target of Socialists and Greens, Italian media writes. According to news outlets, the data of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency suggest that there is a migration emergency, which is also supported by the figures of the Italian Interior Ministry.
The number of migrants landing in Italy is growing at an alarming rate, IlGiornale writes, citing the data of the European Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex). The sings of a migration crisis are more and more pronounced, and the accommodation system is on the brink of collapse. Moreover, the situation is expected to worsen with the advent of summer.
Frontex registered 7800 illegal immigrants all around Europe this April, a fourfold increased compared to April 2020.
The data publised by the agency suggest that the number of migrants arriving in Italy more than doubled in the first four months of this year compared to the same period of 2020. The new figure stands at 11,600 migrants, most of them coming from Tunisia and Ivory Coast.
Frontex’s data are alarming, but there are interest groups in Europe and Italy which would like to conceal the severity of the migration problem, and criticise Frontex for its methods of dealing with the migrants, Il Giornale writes.
Frontex has become victim to political ideologies, the article suggests, citing a diplomatic source. “The political left sees it as a right-wing agency, which is a good excuse for them to claim that Frontex regularly violates international law. Some MEPs even demanded months ago the replacement of Fabrice Leggeri, the agency’s French president,” the source was quoted as saying.
The attacks of Frontex restarted in April, when two new members were elected to its directoral board: Hungarian Deputy Police Chief Zsolt Halmosi, and Croatian Border Police Director Zoran Niceno.
The Italian Interior Ministry’s numbers also support the alarming data and predictions of Frontex regarding Italy. 13,303 arriving migrants were registered by the ministry as of 17 May, compared to the 4,305 people recorded in the same period of last year.
