There has been a record drop in the number of asylum requests in Italy in the second quarter of 2018, Eurostat said Tuesday, reports Ansa.

There were 20,500 fewer requests with respect to the same period in 2017, and 4,500 fewer than the first quarter – both EU records.

“It is the country with the most marked absolute drop in requests, followed by Germany (-12,000 over the year)”, the European statistics agency said.

In Spain requests rose by 6,600 and in Greece by 5,800, again on an annual basis.
