Eight migrants have been discovered alive in the back of a refrigerated lorry bound for the UK at the cross-channel port of Calais on Monday.

The migrants, who claim to be from Afghanistan, were discovered by British authorities during a routine inspection of the lorry before it was loaded onto a ferry headed to the UK, Deutsche Welle reports.

After being discovered by authorities, the eight migrants were taken to the hospital for showing mild signs of hypothermia.

The temperature inside of the back of the truck was reportedly set at around 7 degrees Celsius.

The two Romanian truck drivers were taken into police custody on charges of people smuggling, the public prosecutor’s office in Boulogne-sur-Mer has confirmed.
