On Wednesday morning, during the border control in the settlement of Veščica near Ljutomer, Ljutomer police officers stopped a rented truck with Belgian registration plates. They found that the 49-year-old driver, a Belgian citizen, was illegally transporting 12 foreigners in the vehicle. The driver was taken into custody and will be brought before an investigating judge.
There were five Syrian nationals, four Iraqi nationals, two Iranian nationals, and an Egyptian national in the car. Five foreigners have applied for international protection, and the rest will be returned to the Croatian security authorities, the Murska Sobota Police Directorate announced. The driver of the truck will be prosecuted for illegal crossing of the border or territory.
