State Secretary Raščan takes part in High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament

By: UKOM

State Secretary Stanislav Raščan delivered a video address today at the High-Level Segment of the Conference on Disarmament. He also raised the issue of membership expansion, which has remained unresolved for too long, and called for progress in this matter with a view to enhancing universality, transparency, and multilateralism.

In view of the forthcoming Tenth Review Conference of the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), which is scheduled to take place in New York in August this year, the head of the Slovenian delegation expressed the hope for its positive conclusion, which should include further steps to strengthen the implementation of the Treaty’s three main pillars. He also pointed out that the latter represents the only credible route to nuclear disarmament.

State Secretary Raščan pledged Slovenia’s continued support for the implementation of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and went on to stress the importance of maintaining it. He issued an appeal for the Iranian side to return to full respect of the nuclear commitments contained in the agreement and urged all parties to continue implementing it. He also addressed the situation on the Korean Peninsula, calling on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea to resume dialogue, ratify the Comprehensive Nuclear Test-Ban Treaty (CTBT), and adopt the IAEA inspection system as a first step towards full denuclearisation of the Peninsula.

Established in 1979, the Conference on Disarmament is comprised of 65 member States. So far, the Conference has negotiated major multilateral arms limitation and disarmament agreements, such as the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT), the Biological and Toxin Weapons Convention (BTWC), and the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC).
