(LJUBLJANA) Residents of Sneberje are demanding explanations from the mayor of Ljubljana, Janković, about why the Sava River flooded

By: Domen Mezeg (Nova24tv.si)

The residents of the settlement Ljubljana Sneberje are desperate as the rising waters have completely devastated the settlement. They are wondering if it even makes sense to repair anything since they still do not know where the water came from. This is particularly alarming considering that the area had not experienced flooding in 45 years. They are questioning whether Janković adequately maintains flood protection. They are also interested in why the buried pipes of the C0 canal were swept out of the manholes. What if in the future the same happens, only with sewage in them?

Zoran Janković’s claim that he has things under control appears to be misleading, as demonstrated by the case of the Sneberje settlement, where the Sava River flooded houses and caused significant damage. The 24ur portal reports that residents are still questioning whether it makes sense to repair anything, as it is unclear where the water came from and who is responsible for the spill. They will also demand explanations for the catastrophe from the mayor. Particularly worrisome is the fact that the Sava River had not flooded in that area for 45 years. Concerns arise about the possibility of a similar tragedy happening again. Janković has promised to review flood protection embankments. Have mistakes been made in the past by the municipality in regulating the embankments in Tomačevo? Some individuals speculate that the water breached the fields near Tomačevo and that the embankments there did not collapse, but they rather collapsed at a higher point.

They are demanding answers from Janković regarding the displaced connecting pipes that were swept out of the ground!

In many places, the embankments are indeed breached, and negligent Janković has only now learned from people’s testimonies that some farmers dismantled them to make the terrain more accessible. The Sneberje Civil Initiative warns that the embankments have been neglected for years. It is also necessary to investigate whether there has been proper handling of water regulation for the dam reservoirs of hydroelectric power plants and so on. According to some information, due to rising waters, the sluice gates in Zbilje were opened higher to prevent flooding in Medvode, but this had negative consequences for Sneberje. Sneberje residents will demand answers from the mayor about the nature of the pipes that were swept out of the manholes after being buried. Fortunately, they were reportedly still empty. It is hard to imagine the consequences of sewage spillage throughout the entire settlement and what it would mean for the groundwater… More information is available here.
