The Attorney General of the Republic of Slovenia, Drago Šketa, has made the decision to resign from his position, as announced by the Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office. He made this decision after being caught driving under the influence of alcohol. He has already informed all the relevant institutions about his resignation, as stated by the Supreme State Prosecutor’s Office.
As explained, during a traffic control on Saturday, an unauthorised level of alcohol in exhaled air was detected in Drago Šketa, specifically 0.37 milligrams per litter of exhaled air. He received a fine for the offense.
“He decided to resign because these circumstances could potentially harm the reputation of the state prosecution organisation,” they further clarified.
Šketa held the position of the Attorney General of the Republic of Slovenia since 2017. He started his new six-year term in this role in May this year and was the sole candidate in the tender announced by the Ministry of Justice on November 4th last year.
Throughout his career, Šketa built his experience within the state prosecution organisation, initially as a professional associate, later as an assistant district prosecutor, and then as a district prosecutor. He also served as the head of the District Public Prosecutor’s Office in Maribor until 2017 when he assumed the position of the Attorney General.
The Attorney General is appointed by the National Assembly upon the reasoned proposal of the State Prosecutorial Council, following the prior acquisition of the government’s opinion, for a period of six years with the possibility of reappointment. It is expected that Drago Šketa will be replaced by his deputy Mirjam Kline, who was appointed to this position earlier this year.
The question remains whether driving under the influence of alcohol is indeed the real reason for his resignation. There have been previous controversial moves by Šketa, such as signing a contentious agreement with the Russian State Prosecutor’s Office on the verge of the Russian invasion of Ukraine, as reported earlier. Šketa was also known for other high-profile actions by the prosecution, which often got involved in political projects, especially in connection with the Trenta affair.
Given that the pseudo-leftist coalition has a firm grip on power, it is unlikely that a less politically loaded individual would assume Šketa’s position.
However, it is quite possible that Šketa did not just lose his position due to alcohol behind the wheel, but also due to the interest of Western intelligence agencies. They are well aware that Slovenia, as a member of NATO and the EU, has many officials who have a tendency to lean towards the Kremlin. In the past, many officials have resigned due to similar events, although those were often related to much more serious matters.
