The water buffalo from the Sándorfalvi Ecopark

By UME

Twenty-two water buffalo arrived at the Sándorfalvi Ecopark late last week, but now there are 23 since a calf was born. The four-legged friends, which can be observed up close, have begun restoring the area with great enthusiasm: In just a few days, they cleared a huge area of reed meters high, writes the news portal of the Hungarian county of Csongrád-Csanád, Délmagyar.hu.
As we have already reported, an eco-park has been created in Sándorfalva, next to the Nádastó recreation center. And now you can see more than just the plants from the promenade over the reeds, because the water buffalo have arrived and have changed their environment significantly since they moved in last Friday. For a few days now they have been trampling and grazing a huge area of reeds several meters high, doing the job for which they were “hired”.

The task of the giant animals is to recapture the area from the reeds so that the waterfowl can return,

Therefore, the water must be reclaimed from the reed belts so that the wildlife can return to the watering hole and be observed from the waterfront and the lookout at the end of the promenade.

The dragonflies, for example, fly between the visitors like tiny drones. There are also turtles and of course water buffalo, which, when they are not grazing in the reeds, can be observed at close range wallowing in the wetland.

Gábor Makra, managing director of the municipal non-profit asset management company Sándorfalva GmbH, emphasized that the buffalo is located in a water catchment area that is separate from the recreation park and that there is no connection between the two. The two areas are separated by two dikes and a canal, the latter not being connected to the buffalo pond. People who visit here and the buffalo swim “separately”.
