A leading university lecturer dr Barry Hounsome died at his home in Gosport, Hampshire, UK, on October 29

A 16-year-old boy has appeared in court accused of using a hammer, a knife and an electric drill to murder a university lecturer.

Dr Barry Hounsome, 54, died after being attacked with a hammer, knife and an electric drill at his £200,000 home in Gosport, Hampshire, on Monday October 29.

He was an academic who had carried out research into dementia and Parkinson’s disease and had previously worked at Southampton and Bangor universities.

He lived at the property with his wife Natalia, who is originally from Russia and works at Brighton and Sussex Medical School as a senior lecturer in global health economics.

The defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is charged with murder and appeared at Winchester Crown Court for a preliminary hearing where he spoke only to confirm his name.
