We have a true theatre of the absurd

By: Nina Žoher

The new system for calculating network charges undoubtedly marked the end of the old year and continues to resonate this year. This is especially true because the largest party in the government assured the public there was no reason for concern, only for many to receive significantly higher electricity bills.

The system has negatively impacted the lifestyle of those who try to save money by ironing or doing laundry in the evening hours when tariffs are lower. It goes without saying that this is especially disruptive for families with young children and those living in apartment buildings.

This system has particularly affected the wallets of those who embraced the green transition, which this government so eagerly advocates, as well as businesses, which are the driving force of the country’s development. Some companies have started using generators, and some employers are even considering organising work on weekends when electricity is cheaper.

Due to widespread dissatisfaction, the government called on the Energy Agency to revise the billing system or take responsibility and resign. Many are appalled by this apparent pressure on an independent regulator, as nothing like this has ever happened in Slovenia before. Furthermore, this is being done by those who previously emphasised the importance of respecting democratic values and the rule of law. Since they were in collaboration with the agency before the system’s implementation and raised no objections at the time, many accuse them of trying to shift the blame onto the agency. The Freedom Movement party claims they were misled. But how is that possible when we have such an energy expert at the helm?
