The owners of a newly established gay campground only want to allow in men, something that’s angered some members of the LGBTQ community. Many of them were outraged asking why transgender men could not go, but the co-owner insisted that only men with penises and IDs proving they are male could enter his camp.
A private campground yet to be opened in Michigan will be reserved for homosexual men who would like to enjoy each other’s company in nature. The owners have never tried to conceal the fact that only men will be admitted to the facility, but today, this concept is not progressive enough.
Co-owner Bryan Quinn wrote on Facebook that “Camp Boomerang is a private, membership-only RV park/campground that allows only ‘guys’. A ‘guy,’ in terms of this discussion, is defined as a person with a penis, [who] presents himself as male and has a state-issued ID that says ‘male’.”
Mr Quinn added: “we understand that this statement, unfortunately, may not make everyone happy, but we feel it needs to be clarified,” referring to their vision about the camp site. He wrote that their goal was to build a like-minded atmosphere in the facility.
The announcement has triggered quite an outcry. One individual inquired on Facebook whether they would be inspecting the genitals of the guests. Mr Quinn responded by writing that it will become obvious at the pool at the latest, as guests will be allowed to appear naked. He apologised for the blunt statement, but added that if someone does not like the rules, they can leave.
His remarks have provoked a backlash from trans people and their supporters. A part-time photographer, identifying himself as an up-and-coming amateur porn gay, has warned his followers about the rules in the camp. Jay Steele advised people not to go to Camp Boomerang because the owner would not allow trans men in.
The gay-only campground was blasted for “discriminating against a specific group of people” on various online platforms. Most people slamming the camp argued that trans men should be accepted as normal men. It never occured to them that the point in establishing a men-only campground was precisely that, to exclude certain people, and only to allow in men.
One commenter described the owners as “blatantly uneducated and arrogant”, adding that Bryan Quinn’s post amounted to hate speech and discrimination.
Members of the LGBTQ+ community appear to have turned against one another, with trans people apparently attacking those who are gay for failing to align with their principles.
Natasha Chart, executive director of Women’s Liberation Front (WoLF), has pinpointed certain controversies within the gender community in her recent interview. She told V4NA that only the LGB letters had real legitimacy within the ever expanding LGBTQ+ acronym, stressing that gender identity and sexual orientation are two different things and the rest is just “washing away the boundaries.”
Ms Chart said even lumping the “T” (for trans people) into the LBG term has been a huge catastrophe for gays, lesbians and bisexual people. Although the unique challenges these groups face have nothing to do with the demands of the trans-identified community, they are often forced into the same category, WoLF’s CEO explained.
