Let’s stick to the rules in time of the epidemic and hold on

By: Matej Zorko

The virus does not exist. There is no scientific evidence. The measures are unnecessary. They will destroy the country. They chip us with vaccination. These are short summaries of the records of some that can be traced en masse on social media. One can wonder whether common sense has already completely given up.

As if the virus is exclusively a problem of Slovenia and as if only in our country we have adopted restrictions and measures to prevent the spread of the virus among people. Abroad, some measures are even more drastic, but above all, there is greater control and higher penalties. Considering how crowds of people gather in individual places in our country, which are otherwise really beautiful in the winter idyll, this also shows that there is no real control and the accusations of being a police state are completely inappropriate. For Slovenes in general, it is very typical to deal with others and find only the side that suits them, but they do not want to see the whole picture. The same goes for the rules. “The rules are made to be broken,” is one such popular saying, or the rules are for others, others have to follow them, but I do not have to, I am something more. Finding scientific, legal and other reasons why not to follow the basic rules of hygiene will not stop the virus, but it will steal our valuable time. So let’s endure these few more weeks to get enough vaccine, stick to the recommendations, and the cruel numbers we monitor every day will be lower. No amount of intolerance, nervousness, protests, and government attacks will stop the spread of the virus. The sooner and more eagerly we all stick to the rules; the sooner things can begin to relax. Is that not as clear as day? There is no philosophy here, just common sense. I am not a scientist to speculate on whether the virus exists or not, where it came from and why, the fact is that people get sick and die. To claim that there is nothing, to make a political problem out of it, to blame the government and to declare democracy a dictatorship, is a perversion of the first kind. But I remain an optimist that the silent majority will overpower the anarchist screamers when necessary.
