Hungarian justice minister: Are we the black sheep, just because we don’t want migration?

The Hungarian justice minister gave an interview to the German newspaper Die Welt on Friday. In the interview published on the conservative daily’s portal, Judit Varga spoke about Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union, Brussels’s possible “ideological blackmail” and Hungary’s aim to protect its Christian roots.

In the interview titled Hungary: “Are we the black sheep, just because we don’t want migration?” the Hungarian justice minister said about Germany’s Presidency of the Council of the European Union that despite the coronavirus pandemic, the balance sheet had so far been positive. She emphasized that the most important task now was for the member states and the EU institutions to agree on the fastest possible distribution of the 750-billion-euro recovery fund’s resources.

The agreement reached between the Council of the European Union and the European Parliament on linking the rule of law and the EU subsidies is bad and does not protect the rule of law, but endangers it. According to the minister, following the agreement, there is a possibility that Brussels will start an “ideological blackmail” by threatening financial sanctions in order to force member states to adopt certain political positions. As an example, Ms Varga mentioned migration policy and family policy.

According to the Hungarian minister, the statements made in the EP, which indicate that democracy in Hungary is jeopardised by “systemic threats” are reminiscent of the “style of communist dictatorships.” Hungary wants to protect its Christian roots, it does not want a “multicultural society,” it wants to keep marriage a bond between a man and a woman, she listed.

Ms Varga also pointed out that some EU institutions are violating the sovereignty of her country by playing the role of the Hungarian opposition.
