The announcement was made by the state secretary of the foreign ministry on social media, on Thursday.
A friend in need is a friend indeed, with regional solidarity and European cooperation being evidence of this, the state secretary of Slovakia’s foreign ministry wrote in his Facebook entry on Thursday. Martin Klus announced that Austria and Poland have offered assistance to Slovakia in combating the coronavirus pandemic, and Hungary is also ready to help.
Austria has offered military medical personnel, while Poland will secure 200 beds for Slovakia in intensive care units in Polish hospitals, the state secretary wrote. Mr Klus did not provide details regarding the Hungarian aid.
The Slovak government led by Igor Matovic activated the EU’s civil defence system on Wednesday and asked for help and medical personnel from other EU countries to combat the coronavirus.
Slovakia is currently struggling with an extremely strong second wave of the pandemic. The V4 country now ranks first in the world in terms of the number of fatalities per capita, and there is a growing shortage of doctors and nurses in its hospitals.
