US and Russian presidents may first meet in near future

Joe Biden talked about the possible date of the first meeting of the two leaders in a press briefing on Tuesday.

Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Joe Biden may meet in person for the first time at the G7 summit, President Biden said at the White House on Tuesday afternoon. “This is my hope and expectation. We are working on it,” the US president said. The first time the two leaders spoke to each over the phone was on 13 April.

This year’s G7 summit will be held in Cornwall, UK, between 11-13 June. The summit of the seven leading industrial powers could be Joe Biden’s first overseas visit as US president.Followingthe G7 summit, Biden is scheduled to fly to Brussels on 14 June to meet European Union leaders.

Diplomatic tensions between Russia and the United States have flared up after Joe Biden gave an affirmative response to a reporter, who asked him – in a television interview aired on 17 March – if he thoughtPutinwas a killer. In addition, the US president also claimed that Russia had meddled in the 2020 presidential elections, adding that Putin “will pay a price” for his efforts. Both countries have introduced various sanctions against the other since then.
