Due to a measure taken in the wake of the coronavirus epidemic, those without a valid vaccination certificate will not be allowed to participate in parliament’s work, and will not receive a salary.

Unvaccinated MPs are not allowed to attend parliament’s sessions in Latvia. The Saeima (the unicameral parliament of the Republic of Latvia) in Riga has decided that from 15 November, lawmakers and local council representatives will have to present their vaccination certificates. The decree, adopted on Friday and valid until 1 July 2022, applies both to personal an online meetings, and also orders to suspend the parliamentary allowances of MPs who are unable to work in parliament for this reason.

According to Latvian press reports, 91 of the 100 members of the national parliament have a vaccination certificate. The law was adopted by 62 MPs, with seven votes against and two abstentions.

Latvia has imposed a lockdown until 15 November due to the coronavirus epidemic, as less than 60 per cent of the country’s population (1.9 million) have received two jabs.
