Today’s Hungarian National Day occupies an important place in our lives because it carries so many messages, meanings and teachings that determine our identity and our image of the world and the Hungarian nation in it. However, in the rush of the 21st century, we may tend to overlook their significance, although it is worth stopping and thinking about what history itself reminds us all of us with these days with red letters. In addition to relaxation, it is important to internalize the message of the feast, which, with all its achievements, losses, triumphs and tragedies, proclaims that we are here as God created us, and that this will never change. Many have tried to claim the opposite, but our celebrated heroes have not let it rest on themselves. We won’t either!
October 23 is a date that gives us clues from the not-too-distant past to better understand our world and steer our lives in the right, good direction. How are the heroes of 1956 a role model for us, and what can we learn from them since then? Nothing less than the knowledge and sacrifice to fight to the end for freedom; that a people can hold its own against foreign oppression and a communist power blindly serving foreign powers with a straight back and proud like David against Goliath. And all those involved in the revolution knew that their lives were literally at stake.
Our parents and grandparents had the fire in 1956 that burned in the defenders of Johannes Hunyadi’s castle, in Ferenc Rákóczi’s Kuruzzen or in the enthusiastic crowds of 1848 who no longer wanted to accept the oppression. Special situations bring out special people and special talents. It is a victory of the heart to take up arms against an overwhelming superior power. The Hungarians, who were ready to fight to the end for their country, their nation and their families, showed their determination and strength in 1956.
In many ways, we can say that despite the pandemic, Hungary is in a good position in 2021. We live here in the middle of Europe, in freedom. Our country, bled dry after Trianon, has regained its self-reunited, and we have reunited with our ethnic brothers and sisters across the border. We have proven our physical and moral affiliation through naturalization and citizenship, and we have perhaps the best relations with neighboring peoples and countries in the last hundred years. What Hungary says and does today has weight. We are part of the strongest military and political alliances. We are finally on a path that will allow us to overcome the backwardness of forty years of communism and the outbursts of anger of socialist governments after regime change.
At the same time, we must not sit back, because we must continue to fight for the preservation of our sovereignty. The greatest battle is being fought in the intellectual and ideological arena, against an adversary with whom we share a common destiny. Belonging to Europe has never been in question, but the bureaucrats in Brussels have forgotten that the European Union is an institutional framework, an instrument that exists for the Member States, with powers granted by the Member States, and cannot rule over the Member States by blackmailing them and playing them off against each other. Brussels is now putting pressure on us and forcing an unacceptable ideology on Hungarians to destroy our existing identity in every way. This is unacceptable to any responsible person. The founding fathers of the Union intended to build a relationship based on the cooperation of strong, sovereign nations that help each other, preserve each other’s values and promote the development of member states, which has now become a system of threats and self-imposed capitulation by economic means. Migratory pressures at our borders do not make resolving conflicts any easier, as the EU has been unable for years to take meaningful measures to stem the flow of new waves of immigration. Our position is clear: a strong Hungary can only be built by citizens who rely on thousand-year-old Christian roots and secure family ties in times of need.
Freedom is a treasure that has to be fought for again and again, and not something that one has acquired once and then always possesses – this is what our history teaches us. Just as the heroes of 1956 fought decades ago in bloody battles for Hungary and Hungarian nationality, or our ancestors fought for centuries before them, so we must stand up for our interests and our freedom. Now it is no longer a foreign army that oppresses us, but Brussels, which has entrenched itself in the illusion of the United States of Europe and, with almost imperial arrogance, is trying to subjugate us all, to weaken our Christian national identity, to turn it into a melting pot, to eliminate the uniqueness of the continent, the countries and ultimately the people and our lives, which is already sometimes completely absurd, to turn into surreal expectations.
We must show the world that we are at home here, in this country, and we will not allow our past, our present and our future to be taken away from us! We must show that today’s Hungarians are worthy successors to the heroes who stood up in the autumn of 1956 and defended our homeland with their bare hands. Let us be on the peace march today to show the world and the left, which is fighting for power: We will not forget! We are many, and with the power of love we will protect everything we have achieved together until 2021!
