The attacker, who carried out a terrorist attack in Vienna earlier this month, also intended to look for victims in churches, Austrian Interior Minister Karl Nehammer said today. He announced enhanced protection of churches and other religious buildings.

The latest results of the investigation into the attack that rocked the Austrian capital on November 2nd show that the attacker was modelled after the attack on a church in Nice, France, a few days earlier. According to Nehammer, the attacker also intended to look for victims in churches, reports the Austrian news agency APA.

He warned that they were still “in a difficult and sensitive period” after the terrorist attack. As it cannot be ruled out that someone would imitate the attack in Vienna in which four people were killed, they will tighten the protection of churches, the minister added.

General Director of Public Security Franz Ruf explained that both police officers in uniform and in civilian clothes will be present in front of churches and other religious buildings, the Austrian newspaper Kronen Zeitung reports online.

On the streets of the capitals of the Austrian federal states, security will also be provided by rapid intervention units, which will consist of members of the special unit of the Austrian Police Cobra. They will protect the government quarter, shopping malls, churches, as well as Christmas fairs.
