Another district attorney, backed by US stock market speculator George Soros, took his oath of office on Monday. In his programme, George Gascon outlined a number of ideas designed to help illegal immigrants.
George Gascon was sworn in as the new Los Angeles District Attorney on Monday. The 66-year-old jurist immediately ended cash bail for suspects charged with crimes as well as the death penalty.
Gascon has previously stated that he will set up two justice systems for criminal defendants; those who are American citizens and those who are foreign nationals.
During his campaign in October, Gascon published a detailed plan that outlining how he would use the remit of the Los Angeles District Attorney’s Office to help illegal immigrant criminals avoid arrest and deportation by the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Gascon also plans to reduce prosecution of “low-level, quality of life” offences such as possession of drugs, driving without a licence or public urination. This approach would again help illegal immigrants.
Gascon argues that the “unnecessary time spent in jail” increases the risk that ICE will “identify and pursue immigrant detainees”.
Based on estimates from last year, around 100 illegal immigrant criminals are released in Los Angeles County every day.
Gascon’s predecessor was Jackie Lacey, who was the first African-American woman to hold the position of district attorney.
Gascon’s campaign was heavily funded by US billionaire George Soros. According to the Los Angeles Times, Soros spent more than 2.2 million dollars on supporting the liberal attorney. Billionaire Patty Quillin also donated 1.6 million dollars to the campaign. Quillin’s husband is Netflix CEO Reed Hastings, who also pledged 500 thousand dollars. In total, Gascon managed to rake in 12.4 million dollars, while Jackie Lacey collected 7 million. However, it’s also worth taking a look at the proportions. While 72 per cent of Lacey’s donations came from law enforcement unions, 53 per cent of Gascon’s funds have been sent by the wealthy elite.
George Gascon was previously District Attorney of San Francisco, which became a notorious crime hub during his term:
- crimes against property increased by 50 per cent,
- the number of car thefts increased by 10 per cent above the state average, and
- the rate of violent crime was 54 per cent higher than in the rest of the state, and 82 per cent higher than the national average.
Lieutenant Tracy McCray with the San Francisco Police Department gave an interview to Fox News in January. When asked what would happen to criminals who “expose themselves in a public park”, “smoke crack on a sidewalk,” engage in vandalism or theft under 950 dollars, McCray said violators would be issued a citation at most. The citations would reach the prosecutors, but those cases are very rarely prosecuted.
Anti-police sentiments have reached unprecedented levels in the US following George Floyd’s death….
