In the dispute over a security incident on the Polish-Belarusian border, the government in Warsaw has summoned the chardr of the Belarusian embassy in Poland. The conversation was about a group of “uniformed and armed with guns” who entered Polish territory from Belarus on Tuesday night, the Foreign Ministry in Warsaw said on Wednesday.
“Poland is determined to protect its own borders and the external borders of the European Union,” the statement said. Poland had already summoned the diplomat at the beginning of October after Warsaw accused Belarusian security forces of shooting at two Polish border guards.
“Pushbacks” legalized
In recent months, thousands of migrants from Africa and the Middle East have arrived via Belarus in the EU states of Poland, Latvia and Lithuania. In response to the rising number of migrants, Poland has stationed thousands of soldiers at the border in recent weeks, erected a barbed wire fence, imposed a state of emergency in the border area and legalized so-called pushbacks.
On Friday, the Polish parliament gave the green light for the construction of a controversial fortified border fortification on the border with Belarus. The barrier will extend over a length of more than 100 kilometres along the EU’s eastern external border.
