Migration and coronavirus biggest threats to security of Hungary and Europe this year

Migration and coronavirus were the biggest threats to the security of Hungary and Europe this year. With regards to the pandemic, the vaccine’s arrival and the starting of the inoculation programme prove that there is “light at the end of the tunnel”, but there is no effort on a European level to resolve the issue of migration, the Hungarian PM’s chief security advisor told Hungary’s state news agency.

Gyorgy Bakondi added that Europe hasn’t found a solution with regards to migration for the sixth consecutive year, during which time millions have reached the EU’s territory in complete disregard of the bloc’s external frontiers and national borders, as well as the sovereignty of member states, national and EU regulations and people’s rightful need for security.

Az EU has outlined its migration-related political and ideological objectives and those who fail to follow these and toe the European Union’s official line would face major political pressure, he added.

Mr Bakondi said in 2015 the EU’s narrative focused on the need to help Syrians fleeing war, then it was centered on having to assist minors and families to reach Europe. Later, they talked about how the continent would benefit from a large number of highly skilled refugees and now we reached a point where they say we need to show solidarity towards countries – such as Spain, Italy and Greece – that migrants headed for Europe tend to reach first, adding that the way to demonstrate our solidarity is to participate in the redistribution of migrants based on a so-called quota scheme. And finally, they said there was no need to defend ourselves, we simply just have to manage illegal migration, PM Orban’s top security advisor said.

Mr Bakondi noted that the European Commission’s recently proposed migration action plan would legalise migration and provide housing, social benefits, citizenship and voting rights to 34 million migrants.

“This leads us to conclude that the Soros Plan, a concept that’s been bandied around since 2015, is being gradually incorporated into the EU’s draft legislation and action plans”, he said.

Since 2015 Hungary’s migration policy has focused on the security of citizens, the protection of national sovereignty and the general requirement that people must obey the law, Mr Bakondi stressed.

In order to achieve this, Hungary has established both physical and legal border barriers and deployed significant police and military forces to assist in the task of border protection, the chief security advisor said, adding that Hungary is helping the Balkan countries to prevent illegal migration and also provides aid through its Hungary Helps program. Hungary’s migration policies enjoy a high level of public support, he added.

PM Orban’s top security advisor underlined that in 2021 the government would continue to pursue its proven migration policy, which is designed to ensure domestic and border security.
