On Thursday evening, the results of the primaries of the Left were announced. Accordingly, Klára Dobrev received the most votes in the first round, ahead of Gergely Karácsony and Péter Márki-Zay. At the official announcement, Klára Dobrev described the primaries as the beginning of a change – but political scientists interviewed by Mediaworks Hírcentrum emphasized completely different aspects of the result.

– Given the results of the left’s primaries, it can be said that the casting actually served the interests of the left before 2010 and Ferenc Gyurcsány,” said Erik Tóth, a leading analyst at the Hungarian Centre for Fundamental Rights.

The Democratic Coalition (DK) and Ferenc Gyurcsány himself emerged as the clear winners from the first round, which was decided by backroom agreements and was limited to a narrow field. The DK candidate could be fidesz-KDNP’s challenger in more than half of the individual districts that had been in favor of the opposition in previous elections. All this means that in the National Assembly to be formed after the 2022 elections, the DK faction will be the strongest and the Gyurcsány people will have the greatest potential for pressure.

The leading analyst believes that DK Chairman Gyurcsány can also be pleased that either his wife Klára Dobrev or Gergely Karácsony, who used to work as an advisor to him, will run as the prime minister candidate of the Six-Party Left Coalition.

András Fekete-Győr (Momentum) and Péter Jakab (Jobbik) suffered humiliating defeats: the two party leaders were elected by a frighteningly small number of voters, and they could not even convince their own supporters that they deserve their trust.

– The same scenario could also play out in the second round: Péter Márki-Zay will resign in favor of Karácsony, who also has the support of the other opposition leaders against Klára Dobrev.

– In the course of the left-wing primaries, the suspicion was repeatedly expressed that in several cases the result was already determined in advance, and in analyst circles the prevailing opinion is that the members of the left-liberal rainbow coalition want Gergely Karácsony as a joint candidate for the office of Prime Minister and that the whole procedure is just a farce – according to Dániel Deák, the leading analyst of the Institute of the XXI Century. He added:

This is confirmed by the signs of abuse and fraud. For example.B, after an accident on the M3 motorway, ballot papers were found, and large amounts of cash were found in the car involved in the accident. But according to several reports, the ballot boxes were not sealed and the secret ballot papers in the ballot boxes were not secured at all.

Confidence in the credibility of the results is also undermined, according to the expert, by the collapse of the opposition’s IT system and the fact that even left-liberal newspapers have reported serious problems with recording the counting of votes. To make matters worse, on Thursday afternoon some or all of the premises in Újpest where the counting of votes in Budapest had taken place since early Wednesday morning had to be vacated. MsZP’s headquarters in Villányi út has been designated as one of the new locations.

Dániel Deák came to the conclusion:

Since transparency is not guaranteed in many cases, it is extremely questionable whether the data is genuine or has been manipulated.
