Prominent figures within the European Union have recently signaled to that public that the bloc’s Schengen borders could remained closed through the summer months.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and French President Emmanuel Macron and have both warned people to refrain from making summer holiday plans amid the Chinese COVID-19 virus pandemic.
“I’d advise everyone to wait before making holiday plans. At the moment, no one can make reliable forecasts for July and August. We will need to learn to live with this virus for many months, probably until next year,” the European Commission chief told the German tabloid Bild.
Macron has expressed similar sentiments, vowing maintain strict border control until fall and urging other EU heads of state to do the same.
According to a report from the French news outlet BFMTV, the French president, during a video conference that was held last Friday, said that countries in passport free Schengen Area were considering leaving borders within the space sealed off until September.
