Angela Merkel’s migration policies and made up hunts on migrants left her reputation in tatters in East Germany. Now her own party is afraid she will do more harm than good.
Leaders of the Christian Democratic Union are rejecting campaign help before the fall elections. Matthias Rößler, President of the State Parliament of Saxony issued the following statement: “Campaigning by the Chancellor will not help us in Saxony”.
Mike Mohring, another CDU leader, disagrees. He believes Merkel should be part of the campaign in Thuringia at least.
Not all agree with this assessment in his own party and some even believe involving her would be damaging.
