Election Meddling: Facebook Removes Populist Pages Days Before Spanish Election

In a clear example of election meddling, Facebook has removed numerous large pages which expressed support for the populist Vox Party days before Spain’s general election.

Pages which when combined reached millions of people were deleted for “violating our authenticity policies,” according to the social media giant.

The pages were removed at the request of Avaaz, a left-wing NGO which is funded by George Soros, according to NGO Monitor.

Avaaz asserted that the pages were spreading “misogynist, Islamophobic and homophobic messages”.

“The largest network – Unidad Nacional Española (UNE) – had more than 1.2 million followers, and others reached hundreds of thousands more. Together they had more than 7 million interactions, at a time of intense political activity and focus on the political rise of the upstart far-right party Vox,” reports the Guardian.
