Dutch press warns of upsurge in anti-Semitism

By: V4 Agency

De Telegraaf, the most popular newspaper in the Netherlands, warns of the growing spread of anti-Semitism and heavily criticizes the Dutch elite and the media for being silent about the phenomenon.

An article entitled “Hatred of Jews is spreading, from the streets to living rooms” was published in the weekend edition of De Telegraaf after anti-Israel and pro-Palestinian voices – increasingly anti-Semitic in content – intensified in the country over the recent Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The anti-Semitism of hatred spewers does not seem to frighten those, who are otherwise extremely concerned about racism, writes the author. Comedians, artists, celebrities, scientists, famous journalists and all those who are quick to always judge who is right and who is wrong, they, the self-appointed guardians of our civilization, are now spectacularly silent, the article reads.

The author points out that in Utrecht, Muslims threatened Jews in a pro-Palestinian demonstration. “Muhammad’s army is back,” they chanted, referring to Khaybar, evoking the aggressive, surprise raid by the Prophet Muhammad, which resulted in the permanent elimination of the Jewish presence in Arabia by their extermination.

“Anyone who knows history knows what this means: we attack, we kill, we persecute, and we conquer,” the article states.

Renowned intellectuals sign petitions in droves expressing support for the Palestinians, but remain silent about the thousands of Hamas rockets that have targeted sites in Israel, the article notes.

Pro-Palestinian lobbyists are deliberately exploiting Dutch guilt about colonialism, the author writes. Scholars who condemn Israel see their support for the Palestinians as  part of a “wider process of decolonisation,” she explains.

Why doesn’t the minister of education, or the national coordinator to combat anti-Semitism or the prime minister take a stand against this hatred towards the Jews, which is spreading from the streets to living rooms, the author asks, adding “while the people clamour in the streets, the politicians are silent.”
