Andrej Babis, accompanied by epidemiology experts, will arrive in Budapest on Friday.

Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis will visit Budapest on Friday to meet Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, Mr Babis announced on Twitter on Wednesday.

The bilateral talks will focus on the coronavirus pandemic response, primarily the vaccination campaign. The Czechs are particularly interested in Hungary’s experience regarding the Russian Sputnik V vaccine and the bamlanivimab drug, which Hungary obtained from the United States, and the Czech Republic has also ordered a certain amount, sources in Prague indicate.

According to the Lidovky.cz news portal, the Czech prime minister will be accompanied to Budapest by a group of Covid-19 experts, with former health minister and Mr Babis’s current epidemiology advisor Roman Prymula among them. Czech and Hungarian experts will discuss the vaccination process, the authorisation of vaccines and the treatment of Covid-19 disease in three working groups, according to the news portal.

Currently, the Czech Repubic only administers vaccines approved by the European Union. Experts and the media, however, have been vocal in urging the use of additional vaccines.

Andrej Babis announced on Tuesday that the Czech Republic has already ordered a drug called bamlanivimab from the US pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly, which experts consider to be very effective. Roman Prymula has repeatedly stated that Prague should also consider the procurement of Russia’s Sputnik V vaccine.
