With already 97% of the votes counted, Jair Bolsonaro, the former army paratrooper and right-wing candidate to the Brazilian presidency, is elected with 55.7% of the votes.

Voice of Europe: His rival, from the Leninist-Marxist Worker’s party (“PT” in Portuguese) had 44.3% of the votes. Bolsonaro had a meteoric rise in the last 12 months, coming from 7% in the polls to the first place. In a country ridden by crime, corruption and Marxist narco-guerrilas, his speeches, often considered radical, were highly popular, and he was followed by the crowds in the streets.

Not only he managed to win the presidency (in a country like Brazil, the president is at the same time the head of state and the head of government, since there is no prime minister), but his party skyrocketed from 1 congress member to 52, becoming one of the dominant parties and the main representative of the right-wing.

Although he will only assume the office in 1st of January, it is expected that even before he take his seat he will already start to articulate for the implementation of his flagship measures.
