The case of the mortally threatened teacher has become more complex. Many politicians have openly defended him, but the local mayor was placed under police protection after receiving death threats.

The case of mortally threatened French philosophy teacher Didier Lemaire is starting to become even more complex.  The professor received his first death threat back in November and has been escorted to work by police ever since. Several of his students took offense and even some of his colleagues accused him of racism for stating that Muslim youth should be protected from the threat of Islamic influence.

Several politicians, including  Ile-de-France Region President Valerie Pecresse, and Association of French Regions President Renaud Muselier, spoke out openly on Twitter in defence of the teacher’s stance. They say no teacher can be threatened for honouring the memory of the beheaded history teacher, Samuel Paty, and for defending the values of the Republic.

The politicians have also called for the dismissal of the mayor of Trappes for interfering with the internal affairs of Didier Lemaire’s high school.

The politicians alluded to a letter sent by Mayor Ali Rabeh to the students of the school, telling them not to allow themselves to be distracted from their goals and ambitions.

It appears that the mayor suffered the same fate as Didier Lemaire, the threatened philisophy teacher. Ali Rabeh also received death threats, which he reported to the police, and he was also placed under police protection.

In his post, Mr Rabeh addressed the country’s leading politicians, President Emmanuel Macron, Interior Minister Gerald Darmanin and Valerie Pecresse, the president of the Ile-de-France region. He complained that he had been mortally threatened as one of the elected representatives of the Republic, yet none of the above politicians defended him in public.

Valerie Pecresse soon responded to the tweet, writing that she condemned all threats against officials of the Republic, but also condemned the mayor’s unforgivable mistake of inciting hatred in a high school against a teacher threatened by Islamists.
