“Our neighbouring countries have an increasing share of the British version of the virus. The condition is getting worse. Trends in neighbouring Hungary are worrying,” explained NIJZ Director Milan Krek. A similar trend is recorded in Austria and Italy, and deterioration can also be seen in Croatia. An alarming epidemiological situation has also been reported from some “core European” countries, such as Germany and Belgium.

Both Austria and Hungary have seen a rapid increase in new coronavirus infections in recent days. In our northern neighbours, as many as 3357 new coronavirus infections were recorded in the last day, which is this year’s record. STA also reports that worrying news are coming from Hungary, where a record of 207 people died suffering from Covid-19.

At the same time, another 6502 infections were confirmed in Hungary, which is more than in the previous day. In our northern neighbours, a new record for the number of coronavirus infections was reported yesterday, and an additional hundred infections were confirmed today. Moreover, it is stated that another 26 patients suffering from Covid-19 passed away in the last 24 hours. Worrying epidemiological figures in Austria are not growing exponentially, but our northern neighbours are seeing a growing trend of new coronavirus infections.

Just a week ago, only 2,997 new infections were recorded. However, there are slightly fewer patients in hospital care. Their total number is 1,814. Of these, 386 are being treated in intensive care. As already mentioned, the situation is increasingly worrying in Hungary, where over 160,000 active infections are currently recorded. Hospitals are treating 10,386 patients, of whom 1,170 are on respirators.

However, the epidemic is leaving a bitter aftertaste in some other countries of “core Europe” as well. Italy is celebrating the first national day of remembrance for the victims of covid-19. The main ceremony takes place in Bergamo, which was considered the worst affected Italian city during the first epidemiological wave. In doing so, they recalled the extremely tragic scenes of Italian army trucks taking coffins from the city. Shocking photos circled the world right on this day a year ago.

Furthermore, covid-19 claimed over 100,000 casualties from our western neighbours. Today, a record number of infections is also reported from Germany, where 17,504 infections have been recorded in the last 24 hours, the most since January 22nd. Of great concern is also the rapid increase in the number of infections in Belgium, where for the first time since November the daily average of seven days has exceeded 3,000 infections. A record number of 27,278 new infections was also recorded in Poland, which is this year’s record.

Hungary reports that 95% of new infections are caused by the British strain. As many as 95% of new coronavirus infections confirmed in Hungary in the last few weeks are a much more contagious and severe British version, the diagnostic company Neumann Labs from Budapest announced on Thursday.
