“I take these elections mainly as a boredom of the citizens with the current opposition, as they have practically swept it out of parliament,” said Prime Minister and SDS President Janez Janša in a press release during the parliamentary elections.
The Prime Minister initially thanked all voters who cast their ballots for the SDS. “I thank our teams who worked hard during the election campaign weeks. Especially to both polling stations in my constituencies, where we achieved winning results. I would also like to thank the coalition partners with whom we also cooperated during the election campaign, in addition to doing all the government work,” he said.
Janša further expressed regret that not all parties that cooperated with the coalition in one way or another acted together. “In this case, the result would have been different. The result gives a picture of the large turnout, which we welcome. I want the turnout to be so high in all elections,” he added.
Regarding whether the SDS was successful in the elections, he said: “If this number of seats remains, we have equalled the best result of the party in history. We also significantly increased the number of electoral votes. We have won in many counties where we have never won before. In this regard, thank everyone who worked hard for these results. We ran as a team in the elections and still increased the number of seats from the previous term.”
“The result does not change our programme or principles in any way. We are always ready to cooperate for the common good of Slovenia, regardless of whether we are in the government or in the opposition. We will never act as most of the opposition has done in the last two years,” he said.
As he said, the SDS did not use the funnel tactics in these elections to absorb all the votes that were in one way or another in favour of the government coalition.
Janša also reminded that there are concerns in Europe about some pro-Russian orientations in the work of policies in the member states. “In Slovenia, this concern is justified. In Slovenia, people who have bloody Putin’s medals on their chests proudly walk around the country and comment on the elections,” he said.
He added that he expects the president of the winning party, Robert Golob, to take responsibility for leading the future government, as would be appropriate. “The new government, whatever it may be, faces many challenges, but solid foundations have been laid during this term, and it is possible to move forward quite peacefully on these foundations and avoid the reefs that are known,” Janša said.
