Majority in the poll agrees: Golob must resign

By: Moja Dolenjska

In the October survey Utrip družbe, conducted by the Research Centre of the Institute of Dr Janez Evangelist Krek, the majority believes that Prime Minister Robert Golob should honour his promise and resign if the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (CPC) finds legal violations in his conduct.

According to the survey, 57.3% of respondents believe that Prime Minister Robert Golob should honour his 2022 pre-election promise to resign if the Commission for the Prevention of Corruption (CPC) finds he violated anti-corruption legislation. Only 27.7% think resignation is unnecessary. Notably, even a majority of voters from Golob’s own party, the Freedom Movement (55.8%), expect him to step down, as do more than half of respondents across all political affiliations, right, centre, and left, indicating a firm stance among voters regardless of ideology, the survey authors note.

The final CPC reports on the Bobnar case and the Karigador affair are reportedly in the final stages of adoption. According to media reports, the CPC has concluded in both cases that Golob breached anti-corruption laws.

Respondents were also asked about Christmas bonuses. A mandatory bonus, to be paid by all employers, is supported by 40.4% of those surveyed, while nearly half (49.6%) prefer a non-mandatory, tax-exempt bonus. About 10% were indifferent or unsure.

The public opinion poll included 815 participants. For the party-related portion of the survey, the CATI method (telephone interviews) was used, while the current affairs questions were conducted via CAWI (online panel), a method used for the first time in this survey.
