Karl from Naklo or the situation reminiscing us of a famous marmot from Pennsylvania

It is tragicomic that in the days when the epidemic is waging a great battle in all areas for lives, health and social security of the weakest groups, the preservation of jobs and the existence of companies, the only and main task of the opposition is to fight for power again. We are on two thirds of the fight against the epidemic, Karl Viktor Erjavec or “Karel from Naklo changes the forecast every day on how many votes he has and when he will file a vote of no confidence”, as prof. Dr Matej Lahovnik wrote on Twitter last night.

Or, as Mirko Mayer, a journalist and editor of Planet TV, wrote earlier: “The situation is reminiscent of a famous Pennsylvania marmot that peeks out of hiding once a year and predicts what the weather will be like.”

Yesterday and today, the National Assembly has been deciding on the seventh package for helping the population and the economy. The final decision is expected to be confirmed today, the package includes aid measures worth around 600 million euros. The bill stipulates a larger number of one-off solidarity allowances paid to pensioners, students, employees with the lowest wages, recipients of child allowance, parents with several children, and older low-income farmers. A supplement of 500 euros is also set for newborns born after January 1st, 2020. Public health and social care employees working with covid-19 patients will be rewarded significantly better. The bill also provides for additional measures for companies affected by the covid-19 epidemic. The state will finance the purchase of antigen rapid tests, they will have special loans with a state guarantee, assistance to road passenger transport operators will be extended, assistance to firefighters will be introduced, and a series of measures for agriculture will be determined. After the approval of the law in the National Assembly and its publication in the Gazette of the Republic of Slovenia, the law will enter into force on January 1st, 2021, which means that payments will be mostly made in January.

It could be different if Erjavec was interested in something other than his own interests. The government drafted the law in the first half of December and then accepted it on December 19th, only after DeSUS left the coalition, and Karl Erjavec, the new-old president of this party eagerly set out to fight to be the new prime minister. Although he was not even elected in the last elections to the National Assembly. All he got was a total of 394 votes. But he is interested in power, he does not care a fig about anything else. First his own interest, then a hundred times again his own interest, only then maybe something else.

This does not only apply to Erjavec, it also applies to the leaders of the parties SD, LMŠ, Levica and SAB, led by Tanja Fajon, Marjan Šarec, Luka Mesec, and Alenka Bratušek. Or as Tanja Fajon said in a conversation with the opposition on TV Slovenia: “We agreed that our own interests are before the interests of the state.”

What drives them to power?

By March 13th, 2020, they were a part of the government anyway. This was most clearly presented by Matej Tonin, president of NSi and Vice-President of the current government, in one of the interviews on Planet TV: “Negotiated 10.5 billion euros this summer for Slovenia in Brussels and the establishment of the Demographic Fund.” Or to put it differently: Money and division of property. Prey and plunder. For this, they do not choose the means. Of course, Erjavec “worries” in front of cameras. Also the fact that Slovenia will chair the EU Council in the second half of 2021.

However, only a few people know that Erjavec does not speak any world language. He does not speak English at all, given that he was born abroad, he speaks street French, with which he has nothing to do on the diplomatic floor. But Erjavec was the Minister of Foreign Affairs in the government of Marjan Šarec. Yes, as such, he became famous abroad as “Europe’s most primitive foreign minister”. In Slovenia, he is further described by many as an affair on two legs. Anyway. The higher educated state that even in Erjavec’s case it is only a transitional figure. That the parties whose leaders are so at odds with each other that they cannot see each other, and the lobbies that direct them, already have a new name chosen. As so they play nicely in their sandbox. It will take as long as we, the citizens, allow it. No more and no less.
