“It has unfortunately been shown once again that the so-called Svoboda party’s government is completely spineless. They buckled instantly,” commented European Parliament Member Branko Grims on the news that former President of the Court of Audit, Tomaž Vesel, is suddenly no longer Slovenia’s candidate for European Commissioner.

According to Branko Grims, the most characteristic aspect of Tomaž Vesel’s candidacy was a statement made just over 24 hours ago, where the entire ruling coalition emphatically declared their unwavering support for Vesel and insisted that there was no longer any debate on the matter. “Then a letter arrived from European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, simply rejecting his candidacy and demanding a female candidate, which incidentally is not within her jurisdiction,” Grims emphasised, adding that it is up to the member state to decide who they nominate.

They embarrassed themselves and Slovenia

“Unfortunately, it has once again been shown that the so-called Svoboda party’s government is completely spineless. They buckled instantly. In doing so, they embarrassed themselves and Slovenia in the eyes of the entire European public, because von der Leyen had attempted similar demands in other countries, and except for Bulgaria, no one else had agreed to her requests,” the European Parliament Member highlighted.

Grims went on to explain that the situation reflects how the Svoboda party, or Robert Golob’s ruling coalition, handles personnel. They introduced Vesel at some picnic, announced that although they did not yet have candidates for the European elections, they did have a candidate for European Commissioner. “They insisted on his name and proceeded with the process until two days ago. Then a single letter, which overstepped the legal bounds of the European Commission President’s authority, was enough for Golob to discard him.”

Unfit for their positions

In Grims’ opinion, the left-wingers in power are unfit for the positions they hold. “First and foremost, they have embarrassed themselves – Robert Golob, his government – and unfortunately, they have significantly embarrassed Slovenia on the international stage, which is now seen as a weak link that anyone with five minutes can push around,” he stressed, adding that it might take some time and determination to erase this negative impression on the international stage.

“The selection now unofficially offered by Robert Golob is catastrophic for Slovenia,” Grims asserted. Tanja Fajon is “one of those who lobbied in Brussels during Janez Janša’s government against her own country, Slovenia, so that it would not receive additional funds, simply because Janša and SDS were in power – because the right-wing political option was leading the government.” He called this behaviour entirely unacceptable and akin to betraying one’s own country. “On the other hand, Grims mentioned Marta Kos, a former ambassador who was the only one to organise funding and transportation for men from the LGBT ideology to attend a pride parade in Berlin, where she officially greeted them,” he recalled and added that it is important to consider that, as an ambassador, she represented the official position of Slovenia. In relation to the men who were “humping one another and wearing signs saying, ‘Never Trump’, and then a few months later Trump won the election,” he said, adding that it is easy to imagine how the entire international community was laughing and mocking us at that time, and the kind of impression and damage such people inflict on the international stage.

“What is being proposed is, in my opinion, unacceptable. If anything like this – and I fear it will – is included in the composition of the European Commission, it will only confirm that we cannot expect anything good for Slovenia,” Grims stated, believing that such people are not up to the challenges that Europe now faces. “We must drastically turn away from cultural Marxism, put an end to all the lies and absurdities of the so-called green transition, stop the imposition of LGBT ideology, especially on children, and of course, we must protect the borders and carry out remigration, meaning sending back all those who abuse the legal order of Slovenia and the European Union,” he emphasised, adding that these are challenging tasks, but they are achievable if we have the right, decisive, and decent people in the right positions.

“What is happening with the candidacy for the European Commission is a disgrace,” said SDS leader Janez Janša after the SDS council meeting. He emphasised that “it is the sovereign right of the state to propose someone to the European Commission who it believes will perform well there and also take care of Slovenia’s interests”. “This slapping of Slovenia is only possible in this situation where we have a weak government,” Janša added, according to the STA. European Parliament Member Romana Tomc was also critical, seeing Vesel’s “withdrawal from the candidacy for European Commissioner as a significant blow to Prime Minister Robert Golob, whom European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen apparently sees as the weakest link.” She believes that Vesel did not “withdraw voluntarily, but was forced out,” and that this is all a disgrace for Slovenia.
